These things have made me smile lately

Your epitaph will begin: “She redefined what it meant to be a good woman.”

It will say: “She scaled mountains, in hiking boots and in heels. She started in her own backyard and then went all the way around the world. She accepted challenges with curiosity and determination. She emerged victorious regardless of outcome, knowing both the pleasure of success and the grace of failure. She tasted long hot days and cool still nights, at home wherever she found herself. She wasn’t always popular, but she was always true. She wasn’t always comfortable, but no one can say she didn’t enjoy her life. She explored her edges, increased her capacity, and lived as big as she could dream. Moved equally by bliss and pain, she played her heart out one moment at a time. She was dialed in. She was courageous. She was turned on.”

Art and writing

“with art we can visualize what we cannot write;
with writing, we say what cannot be painted.”

-Rakishi, 1922.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Wow, it has been an atypically long while since I posted here! I apologize to anyone who’s been missing it (hi Mom). Travel, lots of work and illness have all contributed, but I love being busy so I will just have to get better at lining up the queue!

I am sad to be on the opposite coast from my mom this Sunday, but in honor of her unrelenting support I want to post this video that I was so thrilled to make for La Cocina. They are an amazing organization that strives to cultivate low-income food entrepreneurs as they formalize and grow their businesses and their participants are clearly wonderful mothers as well as chefs.

North Oakland Backyard

Kevi’s magical backyard. The chickens were too shy to be pictured this time.

I have somewhere surely lived a life of joy with you

To a Stranger by Walt Whitman

Passing stranger! you do not know how longingly I look upon you,
You must be he I was seeking, or she I was seeking, (it comes to me
as of a dream,)
I have somewhere surely lived a life of joy with you,
All is recall’d as we flit by each other, fluid, affectionate,
chaste, matured,
You grew up with me, were a boy with me or a girl with me,
I ate with you and slept with you, your body has become not yours
only nor left my body mine only,
You give me the pleasure of your eyes, face, flesh, as we pass, you
take of my beard, breast, hands, in return,
I am not to speak to you, I am to think of you when I sit alone or
wake at night alone,
I am to wait, I do not doubt I am to meet you again,
I am to see to it that I do not lose you.
